TENNIS TERMS
Ace	A serve that lands in but out of the reach of your opponent.
Deuce	When the score is tied at 40 to 40.
Double Fault	When your serve is called out two times in a row.
Drop Shot	A ball hit lightly with spin.
Love	A score of zero.
Ground Stroke	A shot hit back at the baseline. There are two types of ground stokes the forehand and backhand. A forehand ground stoke is swung using one arm. For the backhand you can use a one or two hand swing.
Serve	The first shot of every point. A very import shot to perfect.
Volley	This is a short punch at the ball taken at the net. Not a full swing.
Lob	This is a shot hit high in order to project the ball over the opponent’s head .
Advantage	The person who scores the next point after deuce is said to have the advantage or “ad”.
Alley	The area between the singles and doubles sidelines.
Cross-Court	Descriptive of a shot that is hit from one side of the court to the other, as well as over the net.
Doubles	A match between two teams of two players each.
Down The Line	Descriptive of a shot that is hit straight from the near sideline, as opposed to a cross-court shot.
Match	A contest of the best 2 out of 3 sets, or the best 3 out of 5 set.
Game	A contest in which one player or side serves throughout. The first contestant to take four points wins the game, but the margin of victory must be at least two points. Scoring follows the sequence, Fifteen-Thirty-Forty-Game.

Ready position	Feet shoulder-width, knees bent. Stand on balls of feet, hands in front and racquet up

Break – When you win a game against your opponent that was serving.

Break Point – The receiver is said to have a break point whenever he is in a situation where a point won results in him winning the game off of the server.

Deep – A longer shot that lands closer to the baseline than the service line.

Deuce – When the score is tied at 40-40.

Deuce Court – The right side of the tennis court. Deuce points are always served from this side.

Double Fault – When a player misses both serves and loses the point.

Doubles – Playing tennis with four players (2v2).

Error – Any shot that lands outside the court boundary lines.

Fault – Any unsuccessful serve attempt. There are many ways a serve can be a fault, including being stopped by the net and landing outside the service box.

Foot Fault – If the player serving walks or touches the baseline during the serve, this is considered a fault.

Forehand – Type of groundstroke in which the player swings across her body with an open palm. As opposed to Backhand.

Forced Error – When a player is unable to return a very difficult or un-returnable shot. As opposed to an unforced error.
